On Friday, October 24, the Gómez Laá Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Cantabria was filled to capacity for a lecture given by José Antonio Alonso, Professor of Applied Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid. Entitled “Inequality Under Debate: Understanding its Multiple Causes, Effects, and Responses from Latin America,” Alonso offered a profound reflection on the multifaceted dimensions of inequality in the region, its social and economic implications, and possible responses through public policies.
The event generated considerable interest among students, faculty, and the general public, and was further enriched by a subsequent discussion in which Daniel Díaz Fuentes and Sergio Tezanos Vázquez, professors of Applied Economics at the University of Cantabria, participated. The lecture is part of José Antonio Alonso’s recent work, who, together with Rodolfo Gutiérrez, has published the book Pathologies of Inequality in Latin America: Challenges and Consequences (De Gruyter, 2025), a work that analyzes in depth the structural dynamics of inequality in Latin America.
