Special Lecture Jean Monnet given by Professor Andrés Rodríguez-Pose (London School of Economics)

On Monday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m., Professor Andrés Rodríguez-Pose (London School of Economics) gave the Jean Monnet Special Lecture with the title “The revenge of places that do not matter and the growth of populism in Europe and the USA”. The event was organized by the Jean Monnet Module on the Economic and Financial System and Regional Development (EUFIREG) of the University of Cantabria with a great success, counting more than 100 participants.

During the presentation, Professor Andrés Rodríguez-Pose presented part of his research, published in high-impact international journals. Specifically, the presentation addressed the growing territorial gap and the connection that exists with the discontent of some population groups. After ignoring long-term processes of decline, it seems that there is an anti-system vote linked to that (economic and demographic) decline of “the places that do not matter” (or that feel that they do not matter). Professor Rodríguez-Pose emphasized that the places that “do not matter”, “do matter”. What we need is better policies.

Therefore, after an interesting one-hour presentation, the attendees had the opportunity to ask their questions, to which Professor Rodríguez-Pose responded with great kindness.
